How To Rock Instagram Like A Boss

Today I’m going to be focusing on Instagram and helping you rock Instagram like a boss. We will start with the basics of what Instagram is, how to set up an account, and what types of photos you should share to help reach your target audience.

What Is Instagram?

Instagram is a mobile social media platform where you share pictures or videos with other users. Users “heart” or comment on your profile to interact with your content. You have the option of setting your profile to private (where users are approved by you to see your profile) or public (where anyone can follow you).

Instagram is only increasing in popularity- by 2010, they had 1 million users. By the end of 2014, they had 300 million active users a month. Looking for that 18-34 demographic? 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35. 53% of online US adults (18-29) use Instagram.

How can Instagram help you? Depending on your business- you can show pictures of your products, give your followers an inside look into your blog or share pictures of your life. The possibilities really are endless!

How To Set Up An Account

Head over here to the Instagram site and you can sign up. You will have to choose a username and register your email. When you get your account set up- Instagram walks you through several steps to find followers you may know on Facebook, Twitter or even celebrities you would be interested in. You will want to make sure that you have the Instagram app downloaded on your phone or tablet since you can’t upload pictures straight from your computer.

I strongly advise if you are trying to use Instagram for a blog or business that you choose to make your account public. This will help you get a following faster and will save you more time from filtering through follower requests daily. If you find someone following you that you don’t want to follow you- just block them and they can no longer see your content.

What Now?

With Instagram, you generally don’t want to post too many times a day and you don’t want to post back to back photos. You want to make sure you post a high quality photo that’s in good lighting and is consistent with your brand. There are several apps you can use to retouch photos like Afterlight if your photo needs some TLC prior to posting. The picture should be attention grabbing and Instagram allows for you to caption your photo which is your opportunity to talk about why you posted that picture.

You can discover new people to follow via hashtags so it’s important to know what hashtags are relevant for your niche. You can go to a site like Hashtagify and type in a keyword and see associated hashtags you can also use. When you upload a picture, you ideally want to use about 10 hashtags a photo to increase your chances of being seen. Choosing the right hashtag is so important and you want to think like a fan using hashtags they would search for if they were looking for you.

A great way to build relationships with your followers is by liking photos of people who like your photos. You both get to learn more about each other and commenting on a stranger’s photo is totally okay. Instagram also has a direct message feature that you can use to have a more in-depth conversation.

Looking to meet some new people? Try looking at your key hashtags and interacting on the pictures in that stream. Instagram also provides you with a discover tab- filled with similar pictures to ones you’ve liked, pictures from people who also follow people you follow. There are so many options to find new people.
